Problems with getting things semi transparent (recoloring)
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:38:11 AM »
Hey everyone..

Last night I decided to recolor a small set.. But.. I wanted to have something semi transparent.
The mode was already on blend, and i saved it as DXT3, that one turned out pixelated ingame (the texture)
So i tried again but saved it as DXT5, also this one turned out pixelated.

I'm getting frustrated.. I used to know how to get things semi transparent, but it has been ages...
I tried to follow a tutorial i found on BPS, this one to be exact. But.. Every step she done there, i done too and yet the same result. Pixels!  :scare:

Does somebody maybe know what I am still doing wrong?
Or can someone give me an easy (but a good) tutorial?

Hmm, the last time I had that problem, I forgot to use DDS Utilities and imported the textures via right click. :-[
Did you try MTS2? You can search for specific things at the bottom of that page. I've found solutions there before.

Thank you Chrisa for my avi & siggi!

I did look on MTS, there was one tutorial, but when I opened the file.. all the images were like dead.

I need to finish something in game, then I'll give it a try.

Tanja you are my savior!
I downloaded the Nvidia Utilities, imported the image via right click on the image > build DXT , and.. yay it worked. I am SO happy.

Does this also works on all the other stuff you want to make semi transparent, when the mode is on blend??

Glad I could help. :) Like I wrote I ran into the same problem.

Yes it does, all you need is a PNG file with built-in tranparency and it should work on anything. But you can get weird effects if the mesh has overlapping parts, especially if you have solid and semi-transparent parts in the same mesh group- that's the downside of blend mode.
Here is a pic for illustration:
